Coutdown to the Big Interview: Google Jettisons Print Ads Service, Y!Undead, SlideShare – Free Line 1/22/09
Just as a reminder, our big interview with an executive from Slacker Radio will be coming Monday. In the mean time…
The cutbacks are continuing at Google. The Internet giant has announced that they will be scrapping their Print Ads service. For those unaware, Print Ads attempted to bring a distinct Google sensibility to the world of print media. Many within the industry feel the shutdown is due to the dire financial state that most traditional publishers are currently finding themselves in. At press time, Google is planning to “shift its focus” to the online and television divisions. Google Print Ads will officially close its doors March 31st.
Elsewhere: Just because a service or tool is dropped doesn’t necessarily mean that the app has been abandoned forever. Take, for example, Yahoo Live. Yahoo shut down the Qik-like video streaming service in November, citing various popularity and technological issues. Well, the site has returned from the dead, so to speak. The new service, now called Y!Undead, is promising to pick up where the old service left off. While it isn’t exactly Live – the new service will use TokBox to emulate that old Yahoo black magic — Y!Undead proves that good ideas will always have an audience.
Finally, we have SlideShare. In many ways, SlideShare is near-identical to the myriad of Power Point-esque programs found on the Internet today — build a slide show, share a slide show, repeat as needed. It does, however, have a proverbial “ace” up its sleeve. Unlike all of the other programs and services SlideShare users can incorporate various audio files YouTube videos into their slide shows. While it might seem a bit counterproductive, “live” video could easily be the one thing that sets your slide show apart from the pack. SlideShare is available now for all users.
