South Park Free Online - CBS and Hulu Hi-Def Streaming - YouTube Insight - Free Line Report 4.1.08

To save time, a short disclaimer. None of the following Free Tips, Tools and Resources are April Fool’s jokes. They’re just what we do every day here – telling you about people and companies who are Moving the Free Line.

YouTube has recently dropped a new tool into user’s laps called YouTube Insight, which allows you to see who viewed their videos and when and what links they followed to find the video in the first place. So far the response to the new tool has been underwhelming. The actual results are really just too broad for most users to find useful, and even though the geographic information is interesting, it doesn’t shed much light on how a video becomes popular or why. But the idea is pretty cool and the current iteration is a good start.

Next, both CBS and Hulu are trying the waters with Hi-Def streaming, offering on demand free videos of television shows in high quality. So far, both offer good quality definition at a very fast speed, even though very few shows are available just yet. CBS’s offering is in beta and requires a special plug in for your web browser. You can get the link to the specifics in this Techcrunch article.

And a new video streaming site called Omnisio gives you the ability to take clips of your favorite videos and then easily stitch and edit them together online to create fun mashups to share with their friends. The interface is pretty simple, and even though this will never replace a high-profile, high-cost video editor like Adobe Premier, it will allow any non-tech user mix and match their favorite clips into funny and interesting ways. Look for more of this online editing functionality as we go along.

If you like to listen to streaming music online and have always wanted the ability to add these songs into your own playlist on your computer or iPod, look no further than the free music player Songbird. They just released a new stable download that allows you to browse a music collection on music blogs or streaming radio stations and then save them to your playlist, download them to your hard drive, or buy them from an online store.

And today’s Moving the Free Line Award goes to South Park creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker. They decided to start offering every episode of their show online — for free. They said, and I quote, “We got really sick of having to download our own show illegally all the time. So we gave ourselves a legal alternative.” Hey guys, that makes three of us – so thanks for Moving the Free Line!
