The Great Linux Experiment: Installing From Source (Take Two) – Free Line 5/01/09

Our attempt to install Epiphany With WebKit from the source code continues. In order to truly understand what we are going through, we will be posting a real time diary of our experiences. Come back periodically to follow our progress.

11:45 PM: We attempt another install of the WebKit rendering engine. Once again, nothing happens.
11:48 PM: We physically enter the WebKit folder and run the command from there. It works … or so we think…
11:50 PM: …And it hasn’t compiled yet. Apparently, we need to install a program called “GNU gperf.” After a little bit of fiddling, we get it to load.
11:55 PM: Another install attempt. It actually looks promising this time around.
12:02 AM: We were wrong … again. This time around, it says we need something called “ICU.” No big deal. Hopefully, we will find it in no time.
12:10 AM: We finally found it on Yum. It installed pretty easily. (Note for Those New to the Situation: Unlike Windows and OS X, Linux relies on a “package delivery system” in order to deliver new programs and updates. Think of it as Windows Update, only greatly expanded. The most famous system is the Ubuntu-based apt-get. In Fedora, it’s Yum.)
12:15 AM: Now commencing compilation attempt number three. Hope this works…
12:16 AM: …And it didn’t. It says that we need ICU. But… But we just installed it! Maybe we’re missing a file or two.
12:20 AM: No, we have every ICU file that we need. It just isn’t working!
12:30 AM: Now it’s just getting ridiculous. Nothing is working and we’re not exactly sure what to do. It looks like it’s back to Google for us…
12:38 AM: After some searching, we finally run a blog post describing our exact problem. Let’s see what the writer has to say.
12:39 AM: Guess what? It’s in Japanese! Google Translate better come through for us…
12:40 AM: It does. Turns out that we were typing the install line in wrong. Let’s try this yet again.
12:42 AM: The readout says that we need a library called “LibSoup.” No problem. Back to Yum we go.
12:44 AM: Yum says that we have it already installed. Okay… one more time!
12:46 AM: The WebKit install still says we need LibSoup. We’re guessing that more research is required.
12:50 AM: The site we found says we need LibSoup 2.4 or higher. All we have is version 2.25. Yum isn’t helping either.
12:54 AM: Well, this seems like a good place to stop for the night. Once again, check back regularly for updates on our adventure.

Until later, we bid you all a fond adieu from the land of penguins and GNUs.
