Street View Marriage Proposal, Yahoo Search Additions, Twitter Worm, Niche Networking: DoggySpace and HoffSpace

We’ve seen many odd and interesting things on Google Street View, from petty crimes to the downright ridiculous. Google employee Michael Weiss-Malik decided to up the ante, however, with his own unique Street View stunt: a wedding proposal. Weiss-Malik used the service to announce to the world that, yes, he and his fiancee Leslie were indeed ready to be wed. On behalf of the Free Line, we wish the couple nothing but the best.

In other news, Yahoo is changing the way that people use their search engine yet again. Users will now have access to the Yelp, Yahoo Local, and LinkedIn search databases automatically. Previously, users had enable them manually before performing a search. This is the latest in a line of innovate moves by Yahoo, which is currently the second most used search engine in the country. Expect the changes to take effect immediately.

As many fans of the Free Line already know, social networking can have an ugly side. Anti-virus software developers and advocates Kaspersky Labs are reporting that a new virus that targets Twitter users has been discovered. The virus, which poses as a pornographic video, asks the user to install a fake Flash update. According Kaspersky blogger Dmitry Bestuzhev, the “Flash update” is actually a downloader known as “Heur.Downloader.” The downloader will then will load ten Trojan downloader files called “Downloader.Win32.Banload.sco“, all of which pose as MP3s. While officials are still unclear on where the attacks are coming from, many believe that they originated in Brazil. Bestuzhev theorizes that the attack isn’t an entirely original one. “This technique does not require any serious programming skills – buy some Trojans, upload them onto a web server and create a chain of Twitter profiles following each other.” He also says that the real wild card in all of this is Google. “Unfortunately, Google indexes un-protected Twitter profiles, so malicious pages built and marketed with good social engineering tactics end up high in the rankings.”

We will have more on this breaking story soon. In the meantime…

There seems to be a new social networking site in town… and it caters to dogs. Yes, that’s right. DoggySpace “finally” allows those of the canine persuasion join the social party. Users - or rather, the users owners - have a wide variety of items available for use on the site, from pictures to video clips. DoggySpace is up now and is, of course, free to use.

DoggySpace is just one of many new sites aiming towards a niche audience. By appealing to people that usually wouldn’t visit MySpace and Facebook, these niche sites allow advertisers to reach an audience that normally would have been ignored. Our personal favorite niche is HoffSpace, the social site run by David Hasselhoff. Although HoffSpace is just coming out of its planning stages, many analysts agree that it will be a surefire hit in Germany.
