YouTube Help Desk, MySpace TV, KallOut, SideTaker, VideoSurf – Free Line 9-16-08
Google is in the midst of building an online help desk for YouTube … and they need your help to make it possible. The YouTube team is asking you to donate videos ranging from creating playlists to uploading your own videos. Each video should be original, on-topic, and about a minute or two long. The deadline for the YouTube Help Center is October 10th.
On a slightly less argumentative note, it seems as if MySpace is gunning for total online video supremacy with MySpace TV. Unfortunately, the MySpace team doesn’t quite pull it off on the first go around. Although the overall functionality of MySpace TV is comparable to sites like YouTube, the features do not. While the MySpace faithfull will enjoy the new video service immediately, those unsure would be better off waiting for the upgrade.
Redefining search and moving away from keyword based searches seems to be all the rage these days. KallOut plans to achieve this by issuing a free desktop engine that lets you search the web by clicking. Just highlight whatever you want to search, right click and let KallOut do the rest. At first, you might think that this is a simple keyword based search, but it’s not. It uses the keywords in context of whatever document you highlighted, giving you faster and more effective searches.
Elsewhere, television shows about relationship problems have hit the web. SideTaker lets people air their arguments online, and then lets the public vote on who is right and leave comments along the way. Users hide behind fake internet names to ensure their anonymity, so that the next day they can go to work without being harassed. So far, several dozen couples have gone to SideTaker to vent their frustrations, with hundreds of commentators showing up to give free advice.
VideoSurf takes a novel approach to one of the hardest things to do online – search for videos. The approach to video search is revolutionary. When you search for a specific episode of a show that you can’t remember, it will bring back characters scenes and thumbnails, giving you a visual cue to what you might be looking for. Registration for VideoSurf is free and only takes a few seconds. As always, be sure to check us out on the web at freelinereport.com.
