NASA Streams Mars Landing - The Rising - Green Living - iPhone 2.0 and GeoTags - Firefox Shuns Microformats - Free Line Report for 5.27.08

Ever wanted to talk to Martians on MySpace? That future could be a distinct possibility soon, if NASA has its way. They’re bringing all the details and goals of the new mars mission online. They plan on providing real time images of the space craft landing. This will allow millions of people across the world to experience the Martian landscape first hand. And if we see any little green men, we’ll make sure to let them friend us on MySpace and Facebook.

If you believe you are one of those people who have already met a little man from outer space, then Spielberg’s new venture should be right up your alley. It’s a website called The Rising, and it’s out to create a Facebook style social platform for UFO abductees. ET no longer needs to phone home- he just has to post a bulletin on his profile.

For those of us still trapped here on earth, we’ve got a link to Wired’s new How-To section, about using the internet to live green. It’s set up in a wiki format, so if you know anything about living with a low carbon footprint, you can go and share your knowledge with the world.

Earlier on the Free Line we showed you several free online applications that let you add Geo Tags to pictures, including one that used your cellphone. Looks like someone at Apple watches these videos and knows what the public wants. The next version of iPhone, 2.0, will have geo tagging for photos built in directly. Take a picture with your iPhone, and the geo tags automatically pop up.

While we’re on the subject of tags, we’ve got some startling news about the next version of FireFox. It will not have microformat support after all. Microformats are a form of semantic web browsing, a technology now used in Yahoo and Google searches and one that will be used in Digg in the near future. This new technology is hailed as the future of the web, and it seems sad that Firefox won’t have them built in. Fear not, though, for you can always download the Operator plugin and experience web 3.0 first hand.

Myspace Music - YouTube - AT&T’s Pogo Web Browser - Free Line Report 4.22.08

MySpace plans on pushing the Free Line by offering, (and I quote), “all the music in the world” for free.

YouTube rolled out a beta release of its three newest features, which they refer to as improvements in the overall management of your messages, contacts, and videos.

AT&T has decided to enter into the Web Browser market by crafting it’s own offering: Pogoin private beta now.

And finally, Popular Mechanics has an interesting interview online with Web search guru, Udi Manber.

SoCon08 - Atlanta - Free Line Community at Crowdvine - YHOO vs. MSFT - Google News Gets Local - Iminta Launches Tomorrow - Free Line 2.11.08

This weekend was SoCon08 in Atlanta, the second annual Social Media Conference in the ATL. It was very cool, and hundreds of people showed up. One takeaway, Crowdvine is a free app that lets you host your own online community.

So we started one for the Free Line at freeline.crowdvine.com. Join up and see how it works. Plus, it’s a good thing to consider for any of your own internet marketing projects. It only takes a minute to create your own social networking site, and Crowdvine has some cool features — like a faceted tag cloud in the right-hand column that lets you get a feel for all the members at a glance, and the ability to display your own blog feed so other members can see what you’re writing about. Check it out, and be sure to add me as a friend – you can never have too many friends. :-)

Well, Yahoo has officially rejected Microsoft’s bid and is looking for alternatives to keep itself independent, including some sort of partnership with Google. The board thinks Microsoft’s bid is too low. No word on what the shareholders think – those are the ones who were holding the stock at $20 when Microsoft offered $31 a share. Anyway, it shouldn’t matter too much what the board thinks – this IS a hostile takeover. Some sort of poison pill is still a possibility, but this deal is far from dead, and Microsoft is already talking to some of the big shareholders directly. Stay tuned . . . .

Google News now offers local news. Go to news.google.com and enter a zip code or the name of a city. Google then looks for any mention of news for that town. The end results give you multiple sources on every story, giving you a clearer view of the local news.

The web-based Iminta launches into public beta this week. It’s a self-funded project by ex-CNET Product Manager, Aaron Newton. The site allows you to track all of your social networks in one spot and get an RSS feed listing everything you and your friends are up to in one, easy-to read-place. And you can customize the data; for example, if you’ve got a couple friends who Twitter too much, you can sei it to ignore their twitter feeds. The beta launches tomorrow, so request an invitation today. There are other services like this, too, and TechCrunch lists them all.

When you want something more graphical and fun than a Facebook game can offer, here’s Neverball, a free 3D marble madness style game that might keep you playing for hours on end. So there’s your warning.

Now, if you want to be MORE productive and keep current on Web 2.0 in LESS time, join the Free Line community at freeline.crowdvine.com. And subscribe to our email list at freelinereport.com.

Yahoo Opens OpenID - Google Labs - Netscape Dead - Free Line Report 2.4.08

Download the Free Line Video

Yahoo’s Open ID signup is now live. If you use Yahoo’s email, portal page or any other service, just log in to Yahoo’s new OpenID page and fill out some additional information. After that you’ll be able to log into any website that supports OpenID. So far, that includes some big players, like Technorati, Magnolia and Blogger. Unfortunately, it’s a one-way implementation; if you’re already using Open ID, you can’t just login to Yahoo. But this should drive adoption, significantly.

If you want to understand the data portability concept and why it’s important, this 2-minute video explains what you need to know.

Google has recently released some new, experimental search result formats in their experimental labs. Included are search results with maps for locations and a timeline view for searches that show the history of a person, company or topic. For e-commerce merchants, an even bigger deal in Google’s recent decision to display those merchants that use Google Checkout in a link at the top of the search results for certain product searches. That’s live in the main SERP’s now.

NetScape is finally dead. As of last Friday, the first commercial web browser’s demise is official, and it will no longer be updated or supported. Even though Netscape may be a thing of the past, it has passed on its legacy to FireFox and Mozilla, which both share code used in the last version of Netscape. Internet Explorer, bundled with Windows — for free – finally killed Netscape. Yet another example of how moving the Free Line is good for business – and bad for competitors.

Speaking of that, if you’re enjoying the Free Line Report, please leave us a comment! And hit the Digg button – or Stumble or Del.icio.us – any social bookmarking is always appreciated!

Tune in tomorrow for a new SEO content contest. (This kind of “User Generated Content” could win you $500.)

Kultura - WikiMedia - Operator 11 - MetaPlace - Orchestr8 - The Free Line 1.24.08

Kultura and Wikimedia announced a beta program that allows users to log into Wikipedia and create movies collaboratively. The idea is to bring the same social dynamics to video sharing as Wikipedia brought to online research. Definitely worth watching.

Orchestr8 is a new tool for creating widgets out of your own blog. You can download updates and create new content by mashing up your blog features. This is a good way to create or enhance a community for your own website — and keep visitors coming back. And the best part is that it’s free and easy to use. Hence, it makes the Free Line Report for today.

Operator 11 is a new “Social Television Network” currently seeking funding. It’s similar to YouTube, and users can share their own television shows. What makes it unique is founder Josh Harris’s attachment to the art crowd and the interesting videos it promotes.

MetaPlace is a new start-up that enables users to create their own virtual worlds. Want to start your own Second Life? The worlds are easy to create (you can make a new virtual world in just a few hours). Then, you can embed them into a MySpace page or a blog. Very cool.
