The new iTunes store was launched last Thursday, and with it came all of the new portable applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Out of the roughly 550 applications hat have been released, 125 of those applications are completely free.

And of course, the best way to choose what to install on your new iPhone is by seeing it in action. Tech blog TechCrunch has a fantastic feature showing off eight of the new apps.

SpeechCloud: A helpful little tool that adds voice dialing. Simple? Of course. Not everything great has to be complicated.

Wordpress: The sheer power of blogging has hit the iPhone. Keep in touch even when you’re away from your computer. Fun and useful… seems to be Wordpress’ M.O., doesn’t it?

And finally, Google Doc’s has opened up its API, allowing users to add Google Gadgets inside of documents – for example, now you can create stunning reports for your Google Spreadsheet using the Visualization API. Developers will be able to really leverage the two technologies, which is great for people that use Google’s free online alternative to Microsoft Office. Mozilla announced that FireFox 3 is finally ready for public consumption. Until now they have cautioned users to stay away from FireFox 3’s beta, claiming that it was not ready for use and to wait until June for the official, final release. Now, they’re telling us the latest FireFox is ready to use — stable, fast and free of memory leaks.

Ebay has layed off 125 of its workers in both the US and Europe during its massive reorganization, in a move to centralize customer support and other administrative functions. Still going strong, the auction giant plans on hiring more workers within the next year.

And last but not least, Apple Insider says that Apple is finally in talks with music companies over their own music subscription service. Until, Steve Jobs, who sells music on iTunes, has dissed the idea as only “renting music” but now the Nokia/Universal deal (called “Comes with Music“) — allows Nokia cell phone users to download as much Universal’s library as they want – and keep it at the end of the period. Currently Real Music and Napster are the only providers with subscription services – after Yahoo Music dropped its subscriptions earlier this year. Now, it looks like Apple may be next to offer all-you-can-eat music for a flat monthly rate. That’s big news – and by the way, if you’re on iTunes check out the Free Line Report podcast. Facebook announced a new music section with direct integration into iTunes. This is part of the toolkit that we announced last week that allows bands to post music to their Facebook pages, chat with fans, and even upload samples for people to hear. If listeners like the sample, they’ll now be able to purchase the full tracks (or album) from iTunes — without ever leaving Facebook.

The Efficient Frontier has been stacking up the statistics for web services and gives a detailed report on Google’s click-thru ratio that had dropped in the last quarter. By their estimates, Google’s decrease was more about Google making their pay-per-click ads more relevant so they were able to charge more per click through than before. I’m sure the increasing number of advertisers isn’t hurting either.

Social networking fans beware; it looks like the next big thing for hackers is attacking web 2.0 hangouts like MySpace and Facebook. The target of the attacks are varied and spreading fast — we’ll keep you posted on this. Expect to see Facebook, for example, tightening up their rules regarding Facebook apps.
